Activity 1 - Remove The Wings

Purpose: To introduce the key elements of the run.

Procedure: Students line up on the ‘start line’ in groups of 7/8. Students are asked to move between the ‘start line’ and ‘finish line’ completing the following:

  1. Run with straight legs - No bend in the knees.

  2. Run with the arms behind the back.

These will emphasise the key points of the run technique. The following rhymes can be used to remember them:

Legs – Cup of tea upon the knee (high knee lift)

Arms – Hip to lip, don’t cross the zip

                                        Activity 2 - X's and O's Relay

An x’s and o’s grid is set up using nine hula hoops. Students are split into two  teams and they line up one behind the other at the start line. Three bibs of the same colour are placed in front of each team. Eg. Red bibs and blue bibs. In relay fashion the students take it in turn to run up and place the bibs in the hula hoops. The first team to get “three in a row” are the winners. NB. If there is no winner after all three bibs have been placed, then the next team member can move one of their own bibs only.
