  1. Eyes are focused on the target throughout the throw.

  2. Stand side on to the target

  3. Throwing arm nearly straight behind the body.

  4. Step towards the target with foot opposite the throwing arm.

  5. During the throw, body rotates to face forward and weight transfers from back to front foot.

  6. Throwing arm follows through and across the body.

OVERHAND THROW

                                                Common Errors

  • Body remains facing straight ahead with no rotation

  • Foot on same side as throwing hand steps forward

  • No follow through in direction of the target

                                                         Activity 1 - Fill The Hoop

Purpose: To practice the accuracy of the overarm throw.

​

Procedure: The students are split into small groups of 2/3. Each group is given 5 beanbags each and a hula hoop. The hula hoop is placed at a fixed distance from the group of students. In turns students must throw the beanbags so that they land in the hoop. After the 5 beanbags are thrown, students will count the number of beanbags which have successfully landed in the hoop. To increase the difficulty, increase the distance from hula hoop.

Equipment: Bean bags, hula hoops

                                           Activity 2 - Darts

Purpose: To practice the accuracy of the overarm throw.

​

Procedure: A target is placed on the wall (similar to an archery board). Students stand at a fixed distance from the wall in teams. Students must throw an object at the board (bean bag/tennis ball) with the aim of hitting a spot on the board. Points are awarded depending on the area of the board that they hit. Increase the distance from the target board to challenge the students.

Equipment: Target board, various objects (tennis ball, bean bags etc)
